Not Sure Which Material or Grade?
The right wire for your application depends on more than just gauge. Here is a plain-language guide.
Copper wins on conductivity and compact winding. Aluminium wins on weight and cost — for the same cross-section, aluminium wire is roughly one-third the weight and significantly cheaper. For transformers and large motors, aluminium winding is standard practice. For precision electronics, copper remains the default. Use our wire calculators to compare weights per metre.
HB (hard bright) is uncoated mild steel — strong, economical, for indoor binding and fabrication where corrosion is not a factor. GI (galvanised iron) adds a hot-dip zinc coat (≥60 g/m²) for outdoor, agricultural and coastal use. SS (stainless steel) is for demanding environments — food contact, pharmaceutical, marine, or anywhere chlorides or acids are present.
Copper develops a living patina (brown → bronze → verdigris green) that many buyers specifically want — it is the premium aesthetic choice. Aluminium (hard anodised) maintains a consistent finish indefinitely without maintenance and is the better choice for coastal environments and buyers who want a permanent, stable appearance.
